Yesterday, Google Maps made a change for US users, renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’. Apple Maps appears to be following suit in quick succession.
Change in maps follows executive order to alter Gulf of Mexico’s name
At the beginning of his second term, President Trump signed one of his first executive orders to rename the Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’.
This week, that change was officially enacted by government officials and recorded in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
Apple Maps has now been updated for users in the US to reflect this new name.
While the map still displays Gulf of Mexico, tapping to view the location details will now show ‘Gulf of America’ instead.
It is anticipated that the name change will soon be reflected on the map itself.
The revised designation currently only applies within the US, but Apple informed Mark Gurman at Bloomberg that it “would soon roll out the shift for all users worldwide.”
Both Apple and Google adhere to local geographic naming conventions, such as the NGIS, making the change somewhat expected. However, expanding it globally is intriguing, especially given Google’s decision to maintain the Gulf of Mexico label in all countries outside the US.
