In the Apple ecosystem, many enthusiasts prefer the latest iPhones, iPads, and Macs. If you decide to trade in your old iPhone at your carrier, have you considered where it ends up? With their continuing demand, many older iPhones still possess significant value, which is why I recently consulted with the Assurant team to get insights on their updated facilities.
When you exchange a device, it’s easy to assume the journey concludes there, but that is merely the start. Companies like Assurant significantly contribute to revitalizing your old technology. Their latest facility, a 259,000-square-foot Innovation and Device Care Center located in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, highlights the impressive scale and complexity of the current device lifecycle process.
This new facility in the Nashville area, which is twice the size of their previous location in La Vergne, is designed to handle and recycle millions of devices annually. Approximately 800 employees work at this site to test, refurbish, and prepare devices for new users or to responsibly recycle those that are beyond repair. In 2023, their initiatives successfully prevented 1.16 million metric tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. This represents a significant impact from devices that users might have otherwise considered discarded.
Once a device is assigned to Assurant’s “Device Care Center”, it undergoes a series of meticulously calibrated procedures, many of which are enhanced by AI and automation technologies. Engineers on-site continually refine these systems, employing robotics and machine learning to boost efficiency and quality. From diagnostics and software wipes to component replacements and more, each stage is part of a streamlined process aimed at giving devices a new lease on life, frequently extending their usability by several years.
While some may choose to outsource, this new facility exemplifies our commitment to innovative technologies and our workforce, enabling us to enhance experiences for both our customers and employees by controlling every step of the operations, stated Biju Nair, EVP and president, Global Connected Living and International. Our investments, coupled with our skilled team, foster greater sustainability in the connected device landscape by efficiently supplying the global secondary device market.
Being centrally located and near our state’s capital, Mt. Juliet is well-positioned to support Assurant’s activities with the launch of its new Innovation and Device Care Center,” commented Stuart C. McWhorter, Commissioner, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. Assurant stands to leverage Nashville’s flourishing tech talent and access top research institutions, along with local support and resources for sustained growth in Wilson County. I appreciate Assurant’s decision to remain in Tennessee, and we look forward to witnessing the success that follows today’s grand opening.
However, Assurant’s focus extends beyond refurbishment; it is also investing substantially in the future of Tennessee. The company has allocated a $100,000 grant to Middle Tennessee State University to set up the Assurant Engineering Innovation Lab, aimed at supporting the education of future engineers in mechatronics and automation. This initiative underscores the evolving shift towards a circular economy in the tech industry, where extending the lifespan of devices is both a business strategy and an environmental commitment.
Therefore, when you trade in an iPhone or iPad, remember that it likely lands in a facility like Assurant’s repair center, where it has the opportunity to benefit another individual—while also helping to reduce waste on the planet.
