Apple has recently concluded its series of spring announcements, introducing the new MacBook Air, iPad Air, Mac Studio, and iPhone 16e. For the time being, this likely wraps up their announcements, but there’s more on the horizon, particularly the much-anticipated AirTag 2.
Here’s what’s in store for the next iteration of Apple’s favored and budget-friendly item tracker, AirTag, launching later this year. While it might seem mundane, these updates hold significant value.
As reported by insider Kosutami, the upgraded AirTag 2 is expected to launch in May or June, suggesting we might witness the announcement before WWDC. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg also indicates that the release is planned for ‘around the middle of [this] year.’
According to Gurman, AirTag 2 will prioritize three main enhancements to user experience:
- Extended range
- Upgraded wireless chip
- Stronger privacy measures
The new AirTag is likely to include a cutting-edge ultrawide band chip, potentially tripling the precision finding range. This advancement would enable tracking your AirTags from distances of 30-90 meters compared to the current 10-30 meters. The advanced wireless chip is also expected to enhance location accuracy in less populated areas.
Historically, AirTags have been misused for stalking, and some individuals have even altered them to silence the built-in speaker, complicating Apple’s efforts to alert users of a nearby AirTag. The upcoming version aims to address these concerns.
Conclusion
These enhancements will clearly elevate the usefulness of AirTag 2, although you’ll have to wait a few months to experience them. We hope that AirTag 2 will maintain its initial price of $29.
In the meantime, if you’re interested in the current version of AirTag, they are presently discounted, with a single unit available for $23, and a 4-pack for $69.99. That brings the cost down to roughly $18 per AirTag when purchased as a 4-pack!
