New Report: OpenAI Is Developing a Fresh Social Network

According to a recent report, OpenAI might evolve beyond just being the ChatGPT company, as it appears to be exploring the creation of its own social network.

Development of an ‘X-like social network’ at OpenAI

Kylie Robison and Alex Heath report for The Verge:

Multiple sources indicate that OpenAI is developing a social network reminiscent of X.

The initiative is reported to be in its nascent stages, featuring an internal prototype that integrates ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities with a social feed. CEO Sam Altman has been discreetly seeking feedback from external parties concerning the project, according to our informants. It remains uncertain whether OpenAI intends to launch the social network as an independent application or incorporate it directly into ChatGPT, which was recently the most downloaded app worldwide.

The specifics in the report are limited, except for the suggestion that AI could “assist users in sharing higher-quality content” akin to Grok. We have yet to see a social networking platform designed fundamentally around AI, which piques my curiosity.

The Verge also emphasizes that OpenAI is working on numerous projects, and this social media endeavor may never materialize.

However, in a fragmented market that hasn’t seen a significant new player recently, OpenAI’s venture into social networks could potentially disrupt the existing landscape.

It’s an interesting coincidence that ChatGPT has just overtaken TikTok and Instagram as the most downloaded app globally last month.
