Rayyanah Barnawi, a breast cancer researcher, is the first Saudi female astronaut. Ali Al-Qarni, a fighter pilot from Saudi Arabia, joined her.

“To be the first Saudi woman astronaut, serving the region as a whole, it’s an honor and privilege that I’m thrilled to carry,” Barnawi remarked at a recent news appearance.

She noted that, in addition to being excited about the study she will conduct on board, she is looking ahead to discussing her knowledge with children while aboard the ISS. This is not Saudi Arabia’s first venture into space.

A pilot with the air force named Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz participated in a space mission led by the US in 1985. But the Saudi woman’s participation in the space mission is only the latest action taken by the oil-rich Gulf nation.

Peggy Whitson, once a NASA astronaut, and Tennessee businessman John Shoffner, who is acting as the team’s pilot, made up the remaining two astronauts. Whitson is the most seasoned astronaut of the four; this is her fourth trip to the ISS.

Axiom Space organized the private mission. In a million-dollar US chartered trip, the astronauts shot straight for the ISS.

Axiom Space, a commercial space business that offers uncommon flights for millions of dollars, is on its second mission to the International Space Station in collaboration with ISS keyholder NASA.
